Reliability Standard CIP 003-9

Standard CIP 003-9 update:

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a new cybersecurity standard proposed by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to address supply chain risks in the nation's bulk electric system (BES). The standard, called Reliability Standard CIP-003-9, focuses on "low-impact" assets within the BES and requires responsible entities to include vendor electronic remote access security controls in their cybersecurity policies. It also mandates methods for determining and disabling vendor electronic remote access and detecting malicious communications. This new standard expands on the previous standard, which only covered high- and medium-impact assets.

While access management is already part of GridSecurity’s standard full scope offering, those entities that elect GridSecurity’s lowest tier of managed services (i.e. CIP low-impact compliance mgmt. only), will have additional requirements and revenue to those sites.

Quick Update on Critical Infrastructure Security

Energy Transition Summit 2024:

Anticipation is growing for the upcoming Energy Transition Summit, set to take place in Arlington, Virginia, from February 5-8, 2024. Organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI) and the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), the event will feature Grid Security CEO John Franzino on two distinct panels.

The summit promises enriching discussions on the Grid Modernization Initiative and Clean Energy Cybersecurity, showcasing DOE-led efforts that shape the future of the power grid. The focus will be on fostering resilience, security, and equity within the ongoing energy transition. Attendees are encouraged to actively engage in conversations highlighting strategies for future energy systems through partnerships and technology transitions across sectors.

Dedicated sessions on the DOE Grid Modernization Initiative (February 6-8, 2024) will concentrate on building a resilient, reliable, flexible, secure, sustainable, and affordable electricity grid. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the latest Department strategies, ongoing GMI activities, industry initiatives, and stakeholder input opportunities.

Simultaneously, the Clean Energy Cybersecurity theme (February 5-8, 2024) will address critical discussions surrounding cybersecurity in the clean energy transition. This portion of the summit will feature insights from Congress, the White House, DOE, industry stakeholders, and cyber solutions providers.

National Cybersecurity Strategy

Quick Update on Critical Infrastructure Security

In March 2023 the White House released the National Cybersecurity Strategy . This strategy reinforces the government's heightened focus on critical infrastructure security and alludes to further regulatory requirements in the future for all 12 critical industries.
